Texas grand Jury indicts Cheney, Gonzales

(CNN) – A grand jury in south Texas indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on separate charges related to alleged prisoner abuse in federal detention centers, Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra told CNN Tuesday. The Associated Press reported that the indictment stems from Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group – an investment management company that reportedly has interests in the prison companies in charge of the detention centers. It also charges Gonzales halted an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general.

VP Cheney Linked To Prison Abuse

Cheney charged over jail ‘abuses’

A Texas grand jury has charged US Vice-President Dick Cheney for “organised criminal activity” related to alleged abuse of private prison inmates.

The indictment says Mr Cheney – who has invested $85m (£56m) in a company that holds shares in for-profit prisons – conspired to block an investigation.

The indictment has not been seen by a judge, who could dismiss it.

Mr Cheney’s spokeswoman declined to comment, saying his office had not yet received a copy of the charges.

One Texas lawyer said the charges were politically motivated.

‘Conflict of interest’

Cheney indicted for actions related to Vanguard Group

It said there was a “direct conflict of interest” because Mr Cheney had influence over federal contracts awarded to prison companies.

US grand juries weigh evidence to decide whether a case is worthy of being sent for a full trial, before issuing formal charges known as indictments.

The three-page indictment also alleges that former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales “used his position…to stop the investigations as to the wrong doings.”

The grand jury wrote that it made its decision “with great sadness,” but said they had no other choice but to indict Mr Cheney and Mr Gonzales “because we love our country.”

Several other related indictments were brought against a host of public officials in what one lawyer called a circus act by the outgoing prosecutor, Mr Guerra, who he said was seeking revenge in his final weeks in office.

McALLEN, Texas -Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on state charges involving federal prisons in a South Texas county that has been a source of bizarre legal and political battles under the outgoing prosecutor.

This could be the tip of dreams coming true.  Accountability has been ‘SNEERED’ at by the devil’s alter ego for too long.  Just maybe, there is justice, after all.  The underhanded criminal abuse of power has run rampant with the Bush Administration.  Arrogance has been the ‘A’ word for eight miserable years.  That must change.  All our hopes are with the new administration. The ‘A’ word must stand for accountability.  US taxpayers pour a great percentage of their wages into the hands of their government.  The original intent was for taxes to support government works FOR the taxpayer, like infrastructure and health care.

A DREAM COME TRUE WOULD BE TO SEE CHENEY, GONZALES, BUSH, RUMSFELD AND THE WHOLE GANG INSIDE THEIR OWN CREATION.  THEY SHOULD BE TREATED AT LEAST AS GOOD AS THEY TREAT THEIR VICTIMS.  OH! THAT SOUNDS A BIT LIKE THE GOLDEN RULE, DOESN’T IT?

Hey Proud, welcome back – this event deserves kudos no matter what the fallout. If it does nothing more than aggravate Cheney’s lawyers, it is worth it. Gonzales, on the other hand, needs to go back to school … courtesy of the American Prison system.
    They should be room mates.
