OpEd: MSM Keeps Voters Mesmerized By Personalities Not Competence

September 6, 2008

The US news media has focused on the Hype and Circumstance of political celebrities and weather crisis to the tune of keeping America distracted.  Personality wars mean ratings. Ratings mean advertising.  AND advertising means money … that’s what its all about.  So, American voters are still saturated with fluff and nonsense …

Meanwhile, Cheney ends his trip to rattle sabers with Russia.  Rice tries to soothe concerns with Qaddafi about the expansion of AFRICOM.  The US media continues disservice to in depth and meaningful news that determines the future of America.

Granted, most Americans could care less about global events that shape our future, at least denial is warmer and fuzzier, for now.

Did anyone even wonder why Cheney “planned” his trip in the last few months of his lame duck position?  Another military confrontation will improve Republican chances to maintain control over the White House and economy.

While America decides the fate of its future role on this planet, it frightens me that the focus remains on personalities, rather than competence.  America expects its leaders to be entertaining and controversial, so they have an alternative to the fall line up on television networks.  This shallow approach will be the final nail in America’s coffin.  Russia, China and India are ready to step into the Global Leadership role.  Europe and the United States have “shot their wad” and are now mere amusement for the real powers.  Global powers look to the US for entertainment and will harvest our remaining products while we decline.  Global economies are no longer obliged to prop up America’s self consuming ego.  Other markets have emerged to replace our consumer spending power.  America has been bought and paid for.  We are only taken seriously because we still have “weapons of mass destruction” at our fingertips. America still starts conflicts to create a larger arms market, for those interests with the largest wallets.  America’s politicians must defer to Global Manipulators for campaign funding and contract preferences. Why do you think congress caved in to the Bush/Cheney warmongering? It was made clear that opposition would cut too many purse strings.  The India Nuclear deal is one of the last carrots the US has left on the world stage.  If not OIL, then it will be Nukes!

The most effective way to insure a sustainable war mentality is to arrange, or allow, a terrorist attack on American soil to justify crazy, misguided retaliations. Misguided?  Al Qaida was tagged as responsible right away (right or wrong) and after a required, token invasion of Afghanistan, the REAL target replaced the justifiable one.  Oil is on the Global Market mindset.  The US is tasked with shaking the loose oil resources from the grip of OPEC’s radical factions.  The US and its allies are reaping the consequences of pre-emptive actions every day.  Jihads have a new tactic to fight back … “US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to “start forest fires”, claiming “scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels’ forests when they do the same to our lands”.

Cheney’s efforts may not be realized for a few months, but, there was more to this trip than what was advertised. If the stand off with Russia escalates, we will know what he was really doing over there.

On the other hand, Rice made the necessary trip to Africa to pave America’s military expansion on that continent.  Europe has had it way, now, America deems it important to pick up where Europe left off.  There are many euphemisms for Imperialism.  Humanitarian aid is only one.  America must prop up its dictators and keep its fist around the material wealth Africa offers.  Enter AFRICOM.

Americans are faced with the most crucial decision of their lifetime.  Focus on non-issues threatens Global security … yes, America still occupies the same globe as everyone else, so its security is linked with everyone else.  That’s the message I feel is being lost.  Shooting holes in the bottom of your own lifeboat is a pretty stupid decision.  Decline in America’s IQ is directly related to years of distraction from the realities of life and survival. Food is not grown at the grocery store. Very few American students can grasp where the things they use, come from.  But, they can tell you the latest gossip about their heart throbs.  Global responsibility is not imaginary.  This planet is our lifeboat.  Wars are holes. Consumerism drills more holes. This is classic The Ant and the Grasshopper Aesop fable … Mars is not ready to accept survivors, thats a very long journey, anyway.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content.  An Ant walked by, grunting as he carried a plump kernel of corn.

“Where are you off to with that heavy thing?” asked the Grasshopper.

Without stopping, the Ant replied, “To our ant hill.  This is the third kernel I’ve delivered today.”

“Why not come and sing with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of working so hard?””I am helping to store food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and think you should do the same.” “Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; “we have plenty of food right now.”But the Ant went on its way and continued its work.

The weather soon turned cold.  All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through.  Soon the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.

He staggered to the ants’ hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew:

It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.
