Tibet In Chaos – China Faces Olympic Boycott

March 16, 2008

Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has called for an international investigation into the Chinese crackdown on protesters in Tibet. According to the Tibetan government in exile at least 80 people were killed in the Tibetan capital Lhasa when Chinese security forces clashed with demonstrators protesting against Chinese rule on Friday. Speaking at a press conference the Dalai Lama accused China of cultural genocide and treating Tibetans as second class citizens. China has imposed a strict curfew in Lhasa and large numbers of security forces are patrolling the streets and conducting house-to-house searches for protesters. Chinese officials have given protesters until Monday to surrender or face serious consequences. Meanwhile there are unconfirmed reports of further Tibetan independence protests with arrests and casualties in China’s southwestern Sichuan province.

Chinese police searching door to door in a section of Lhasa Sunday as part of a crackdown following violent protests in the Tibetan capital that may have left as many as 100 dead.

“We call on the Chinese government to exercise restraint in dealing with these protests, and we strongly urge all sides to refrain from violence,” she said.

“We urge China to respect the fundamental and universally recognized right of all of its citizens to peacefully express their political and religious views,” Rice said in a written statement. “And we call on China to release monks and others who have been detained solely for the peaceful expression of their views.”

In Kathmandu, Nepal, about 100 Tibetan exiles — including monks, nuns and children — began a hunger strike Saturday to protest the deaths of the demonstrators in Lhasa, a Free Tibet activist said. “Police hit those on hunger strike with batons and arrested them,” Thupten Tenzing Jamphel said. DHARAMSALA: The Dalai Lama told reporters on Sunday afternoon that despite the protests he still wanted to walk the middle ground, seeking autonomy, and not independence, for Tibet ( Watch ). He said he would continue to support the 2008 Beijing Olympics, despite the current tension and unrest in Tibet. However, he added that China needs to show “it is a good host”.

He said Tibet should lean on China for material growth. However, culturally, Tibetans should be free to follow their traditions. He said China was relying on force to bring peace, but peace can only be achieved if “it comes from the heart of people”. Currently, China had put restrictions on monasteries and imposed “political education”, choking Tibet culturally.

Olympics chief rejects boycott over Tibet The president of the International Olympic Committee rejected the idea of boycotting the Summer Games in Beijing over China’s crackdown in Tibet, saying it would only hurt athletes. He declined to say whether the committee would change its stance if violence continues or more people are killed.

“The International Olympic Committee has consistently resisted calls for a boycott of the Olympic games,” Rogge said. He declined to comment further on Tibet during a brief news conference.

The head of the Swiss Olympic Committee told state-owned DRS radio that he is against a boycott but wants the IOC to intervene with China over the troubles in Tibet.

“The Rubicon has been crossed,” Joerg Schild said. “I can’t bring myself to say that we’re going to go there.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president Thomas Bach says a number of top athletes are considering boycotting the games in China over the bloody crackdown on protesters in Tibet

China declares ‘People’s War’ as Tibet simmers

NEW DELHI: From Athens to the Everest, China is feeling the heat of the “Free Tibet” campaign just five months before the biggest show on earth- the 2008 Olympics – opens in Beijing in August. Tibetan activists are working overtime to make sure that they use China’s Olympic hype to get maximum mileage for their cause. “We have planned marches, rallies, speeches around the world. We are even organizing Tibetan version of the Olympics in Dharamsala. We will chase the Olympics torch and protest wherever it goes. As China plans to use the games to showcase itself as the world’s new superpower, we will expose its ugly record in Tibet,” says a Tibetan activist.

With its reputation at stake, the Chinese are not taking the threat lightly. On Saturday, agreeing to China’s request, Nepal blocked access to Mt Everest to prevent Tibetans from staging a protest at the peak.

The US Democratic Party leader arrives in Dharamsala on Friday. Nancy Pelosi is expected to meet the Dalai Lama, Tibetan refugees and human rights activists. “We are expecting her to issue a really strong statement,” says a Tibetan official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “It will put real pressure on China.” (The next day) Richard Gere will arrive in the town for a meeting with the Dalai Lama. The Hollywood star, who said on Friday that China “should suffer a boycott of the Beijing Olympics if it mishandles protests in Tibet”, is likely to repeat his “boycott call” in Dharamsala.

300-400 Tibetans reported dead, unconfirmed; Big Three monasteries under siege by Chinese security forces.

CHINA WELCOMES THE WORLD and its actions speak for themselves. Countries can focus on the spirit of athletes in competition. But, in light of current actions by the Chinese Government, countries should pause and reflect on 1936. What if the world had boycotted Hitler’s Olympics? Would he have been so bold as to kill millions of people and change the word Holocaust into Genocide? As with Germany of the 1930s and 1940s, China will prevail because the world sees MARKET! Money can trump Human Rights every time. The world will shake its finger at China while rattling the coins in their pockets. Where there is money, blind eyes will turn … Tibet has no oil or cheap product to win the hearts of the greedy world.

Gao, as long as China fears religious leaders as threats to political ideology, China will face disdain from those who have made peace with religion, whether they believe in them or not. Great numbers of people need religion to help them tolerate their daily existence. That does not present a threat unless the religious feel suppressed or threatened, then the fanatics will appear everywhere. Just look at the middle east; Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Pakistan, Indonesia … the violence is given to extremists in the name of “threatened religion”.

Anonymous, we know that American Democracy is an idea and not a behavior. There are many Americans that want the premise to be reality.

AS a person with an affinity towards all things and persons Buddhist , this crack down is literally making ill with compassion and frustration to stop this massacre – 300 -400 dead and how many imprisoned. And the business interests will not stop this stupid freakin BS of the Olympics – i mean where the hell are our priorities of this so called christian nation of ours. A new level of shame has entered my shame of being an american – and i thought it could not go deeper BUT it has. And to those who do not see the complexities of China, the history and the beauty and human rights of Tibetans to be autonomous and have the freedom of their religious practices and their basic human rights…you are freakin situational in your spirituality and a shame to real red letter christians of this planet. You are a brainwashed lot ,and trying to create a prostestant theocracy right here, as bad or worse than the treacherous oppressive doings of the Catholic Church – and the sad thing is that there are Liberation Theologists and mystics, contemplatives who practice their spirituality deeply – the current mob of bible thumpers is a perversion of the FAITH. Shame on you all or any who would ever think they know the mind of “god” its dogma you freakin morons..the bible is a book , a great book for meditation and prayer..

its NOT a “how to manual” unless you lived over 2000 yrs ago and it was Cherry Picked , edited for the social control the church wanted…For the of all that true and good..Practice your faith, think deeper, see the beautiful metaphors and layers of the scriptures.

please. Pretty soon if you do not stop your dogmatic BS, we will be burning witches again….

Gao, I chose not to disgust my readers. They know where to find the blood and guts. I don’t post videos, sometimes I will link to them.
I am not sure I understand about the “the funds that’ve been lavished on them”. If you can share some insight, I will update my post. Thanks

Some people protest do not mean their course is worth the funds that’ve been lavished on them. As for the photos, where are those with burning vehicles and shops, raped citizen girls and stone-throwing mobs?

Very good Artem, Jesus would be very ashamed of what you just said. Jesus wasn’t a Christian either. He was a very progressive Rabbi. Jesus tried to bring people together with love and understanding under Judaic law as he interpreted it. His followers have mutated his words into an exclusive cult that shames Jesus name.

Well if the Tibetans would just be Christians then maybe someone would care. As for now they’re just a bunch of pagans and Jesus won’t help them.
