National Treasures and American History on eBay

November 20, 2011

The words of our Founding Fathers, their wives, their chroniclers and their associates, are for sale to the highest bidder.  This is a very enlightening but disturbing find, while researching prices for some of my own antique books.  I was riveted to see the extent that original documents and initial publications, are in the general collector’s hands.  It is also interesting that some of the history in these documents and books are never mentioned in schools … what students don’t know is already hurting us.

This long excruciating campaign season is a great example that American History is re-written by the candidates to schmooze the vote.  Political marketers target the uninformed and dis-interested voter with spicy one lined reasons to vote for their candidate.  The season of disinformation is upon us again … ah, the American way.

Amazing what “National Treasures” are available on eBay!

– A TRUE CHRONICLE OF LIBERTY  1529-1919 / 34 ITEMS – asking price $1 Million

INTRODUCTION: JOHN ADAMS’ LAMENT ABOUT RECORDED HISTORY

“In plain English, and in a few words Mr. Niles, I consider the true history of the American Revolution & the establishment of our present Constitution as lost forever. And nothing but misrepresentations or partial account of it, ever will be recovered.” – John Adams to Hezekiah Niles

John Adams’ lament about the inaccuracy and corruption of recorded history was well-founded. Today, thanks to decades of historic revisionism and educational failure, most Americans are astonishingly ignorant about the priceless historic heritage that produced our now faltering freedoms. Inattention to liberty’s origins is leading to liberty’s end.

–  THE PROSPECT BEFORE US, JAMES CALLENDER, 1800, SEDITION

What makes this booklet so exceedingly rare is that fact that it was suppressed by the U.S. Government as a result of the Sedition Act passed in 1798, resulting in James Callender being put on trial and the confiscation of the copies of this booklet he still had and their subsequent destruction.  Copies in private hands like this survived, but since it was not bound well to begin with, many copies disintegrated due to multiple time and age related causes.

James Thomson Callender, Scandlmonger – Period: 1790s
He was the new republic’s most notorious scandalmonger. During the 1790s, James Thomson Callender published vicious attacks on George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and other leading political figures.
Born in Scotland in 1758, Callender was an early advocate of Scottish independence from Britain. After being indicted for sedition, he fled to Philadelphia in 1793, where he supported himself as a journalist and political propagandist.
Profoundly suspicious of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton’s pro-British views on foreign policy, Callender used his pen to discredit Hamilton in 1797. Hamilton’s public reputation was tarnished, and he never held public office again.
In 1798, Hamilton’s political party, the Federalists, pushed the Sedition Act through Congress, making it a crime to attack the government or the president with false, scandalous, or malicious statements. The most famous seditious libel trial was that of James Thompson Callender (United States v. James Thompson Callender, 1800).

Historical revisionism   Quote WIKI Political Influence section:

History provides insight into past political trends and helps predict political implications of the present. Revisionism can be used to cultivate specific politically motivated myths – sometimes with official consent. [14] Self-taught, amateur, or dissident academic historians manipulate and/or misrepresent historical accounts to achieve deliberate political ends. Herodotus, for example, wrote his version of history to gather political support for the Greek system of government over the aggressive Persian despot.[15] Also, Communism and Soviet historiography treated reality and the party line as one and the same,[16] employing historical revisionism to advance a specific political (and ideological) agenda.[17]

Disinformation  Quote WIKI:  Disinformation (a translation of the Russian word dezinformatsiya) is intentionally false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately.

So, we can all rewrite history to suit out personal desires.  We do it every day when we exaggerate little anecdotes about ourselves to our friends or our boss.  But, when it becomes a tool of a determined political faction to justify whatever political goals they are after, it is no better than a crime.  That is called “disinformation”,  for those of us old enough to remember the original “Cold War”.
