Wil
If you'll excuse my French : the 'nuclear issue' is, was, and always has been as big a crock as Iraq WMD - and came from the same impeccable source : Dick Cheney's private intelligence-bending/fabrication section.
The CIA issued 2 fairly recent contradictions !
Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis when US deploying nukes to Ankara, Turkey resulted in silos being installed in Cuba ? JFK and Bobbie sweat blood over that one : as did we all.
How receptive do you therefore think Russia today - it was by far the senior partrner in the U.S.S.R. - is to the idea of putting Iran in the position - or anything like it - that they raised holy Hell over decades ago ?
Doesn't make sense nohow no matter who shouts it long and loud on a Rovian megaphone.
Check out the differences between fission and fusion technology. They are incompatible.

Unfortunately, I agree, Wil. Mousavi has a better image to sell than Ahmadenijad. The west appears to have bought that image and has jumped on a bandwagon without knowing its destination. I see an analogy with the 'Tar Baby' begging NOT to be thrown into the 'Briar Patch'. Are you old enough to remember those stories?

Don't fool yourself - there is no difference between Mousavi and Ahmedinejad. Power rests with the clerics - always has, and always will. They choose the candidates. They orchestrate the campaign.

Mousavi has exactly the same position as Ahmedinejad on the nuclear issue.

the media is presenting this like it's a revolution of reform, an anti-theocratic movement. It's not.

Until the clerics release their grip from power, the president of Iran and the elections are little more than a public display, and the president holds no real power. The clerics have no interest in keeping Ahmedinejad in power - they would control Mousavi just as easily.

Russia and China are perfectly okay with A. taking point as figurehead ruler. He made good speechifying in Russia. Rick at Ten Percent has a good thread going at his Iran-a-rama post.
Facebook is something new for me : and Twitter mostly in disuse until other sources went out in Iran. Leads are coming at me so fast these days blogging articles is getting constantly harder : so I cheat by firing some in different blogs and bookmarks. I can't imagine what it's like keeping up with your Progressive Texans !

Oh Opit, I am so Time Management challenged that adding Twitter to my agenda is like ... well, analogies deleted. I succumbed to joining Facebook because a relative chided me for not visiting her family photos. Not knowing any better, I failed to learn about filtering or making my profile private. I signed up for Twitter long ago but cannot, for the life of me, remember my password. Not looking too hard either. I Googled these guys and bookmarked them so I can listen tomorrow. I thought US elections were entertaining, well we may only number three behind Iran, Indonesia and Pakistan or maybe Thailand. If Ahmedenijad allows harm to Mousavi, Iran may have another revolution, or a whole lot of 'disappeareds'. Wouldn't Israel just love that?
